Thin, foldable, crisp underneath, and built for city life.
New York-style pizza is more than just a type of pizza. It is a culture built around neighborhood slice shops, late nights, quick lunches, and the simple idea that really good food should be part of everyday life.
At Sacred Slice Pizza, we are bringing that tradition to Barcelona in our own way.
Located on Carrer de Roger de Llúria 155 in L’Antiga Esquerra de l’Eixample, Sacred Slice Pizza is built around classic New York-style slices and whole pies made with long-fermented dough, quality ingredients, and a deep respect for the craft behind great pizza.
But Sacred Slice Pizza is not meant to feel like a traditional New York slice shop dropped into Barcelona.
We have put enormous thought into the design, atmosphere, music, cocktails, dining experience, and overall energy of the space. Alongside pizza by the slice and whole pies, the restaurant will feature a full bar, terrace seating, and indoor dining designed to create a destination unlike anything else currently in Barcelona’s pizza scene.
Our goal is to honor New York-style pizza while building something unique to this city and the people who live here.
The short answer
New York-style pizza is known for its large slices, thin hand-stretched crust, crisp underside, chewy edge, and signature fold.
It is designed to be eaten by hand.
A great New York slice holds its shape when you pick it up, folds naturally down the center, and delivers the balance of crunch, chew, sauce, cheese, and char in every bite.
Traditionally, New York-style pizza is baked on a stone deck oven rather than a wood-fired oven, giving the crust its distinctive texture and structure.
And unlike many styles of pizza that are primarily served whole, New York pizza became famous through slice shops – places where people could walk in, grab a slice quickly, and continue with their day.
That everyday accessibility is part of what makes the style special.
What makes a slice a New York slice?
A proper New York-style pizza depends on balance. Every part of the process matters.
The dough
New York-style dough is typically made with high-protein flour and fermented slowly over time to develop flavor, structure, and texture.
The result is a crust that stays thin through the center while still developing a chewy, blistered edge during the bake.
The dough should feel light, not heavy. The crust should crisp without becoming brittle. And the slice should stay structured enough to fold naturally without collapsing.
At Sacred Slice Pizza, our dough is made fresh and fermented slowly to develop the texture and flavor we believe great New York-style pizza deserves.
The bake
A classic New York-style pizza is baked on a hot stone deck at high heat.
The goal is a pizza that develops crispness underneath while keeping enough chew around the edge to stay flexible and balanced.
We bake on an ItalForni Bull XL electric deck oven, chosen specifically for the style of pizza we want to make.
For us, the oven is simply a tool to achieve consistency, texture, and character in every slice.
The cheese and sauce
New York-style pizza traditionally uses low-moisture mozzarella, which melts evenly and creates the smooth, cohesive cheese layer associated with classic slices.
The sauce is usually simple and balanced: tomato-forward, lightly seasoned, and designed to support the dough rather than overpower it.
The beauty of a great slice is restraint. Nothing should fight for attention. The crust, sauce, cheese, and toppings should all work together.
The fold
One of the defining characteristics of New York-style pizza is the fold.
Pick up a slice by the crust, fold it gently inward, and the tip should hold its shape while still remaining soft enough to bite through cleanly.
That balance between structure and flexibility is one of the signatures of the style.
New York-style pizza and Neapolitan pizza are different traditions – not competitors
People compare New York-style and Neapolitan pizza constantly, but the truth is they were built for different moments.
Neapolitan pizza is rooted in tradition, simplicity, and high-heat baking. It is soft, delicate, and designed to be enjoyed fresh out of the oven at the table.
Barcelona already has some truly excellent Neapolitan pizza, and we love that the city appreciates that style so deeply.
New York-style pizza comes from those same Italian roots, but evolved differently over generations in New York City.
The pies became larger. The crust became sturdier. The slices became foldable. And pizza became woven into the rhythm of daily city life.
A New York slice is designed for movement: lunch breaks, late nights, quick dinners, walking home, and sharing a pie with friends.
It is casual, comforting, and deeply tied to neighborhood culture.
That is the experience we are excited to bring to Barcelona.
Not because one style is better than another. Simply because we believe there is room for both.
Why pizza by the slice matters in Barcelona
Most pizza in Barcelona is served as a sit-down meal.
A slice shop creates a different kind of experience.
You walk in. You order at the counter. You grab a slice. Maybe two. Maybe a whole pie for the table.
It is fast without feeling rushed. Casual without sacrificing quality.
That rhythm is part of New York slice culture, and it is something we felt Barcelona was missing.
At Sacred Slice Pizza, we are building the kind of neighborhood spot we personally love spending time in: good music, great pizza, strong cocktails, thoughtful design, terrace dining, indoor seating, and food people genuinely crave.

Why we opened Sacred Slice Pizza
What we missed most was not simply “pizza.” It was the feeling of a real neighborhood slice shop.
A place you can walk into casually. A place that feels alive. A place where the pizza is consistently great whether you are grabbing one slice, enjoying cocktails on the terrace, or sitting down inside with friends for a full meal.
After living in Barcelona, we realized how difficult that experience was to find here.
So we decided to build it ourselves.
Sacred Slice Pizza is our attempt to honor New York-style pizza while creating something entirely unique for Barcelona.
We care deeply about the dough, the ingredients, the music, the cocktails, the atmosphere, the design, and the experience people have the moment they walk through our doors.
At the end of the day, we simply want to create a place people genuinely crave returning to.
